"Signed, Summer in Philly" Story Art

Many people ask me, "Summer, do you draw the illustrations first or write the story?" Usually, as an illustrator I want to write the story first and then see what a drawing or painting can do to get the mood across. A particular sentence or phrasing will strike me and I'll hastily sketch something on a napkin in a coffee shop. Then it'll become full fledged in my Manayunk design studio - I call it "Hammerspace".
